Barbara Merrell

August 3, 1954 ~ November 9, 2023 (age 69) 69 Years Old

Barbara Merrell, 69, of Meridian Idaho, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2023, surrounded by her sister Carolyn and caregivers Karissa Storkson and Jan.  Barbara was born on August 3, 1954 in Salt Lake City, Utah to William and Pauline Adams. She graduated from Stevens Henneger Business College SLC in 1974 and worked in the insurance industry until retirement in 2015. She worked in SLC, Utah for USF& G as a Claims adjuster and supervisor, then for Great West as a Senior Claims Adjuster until retirement in Meridian Idaho.  She was a self-made person, starting work at age 18, facing her challenges with determination and perseverance. She found encouragement from a small plaque in her room “If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you can win, you will”.  She did achieve each goal, meeting each challenge in her work life with compassion and professionalism.

Barbara was super smart, witty, and a very generous person who loved her family, friends, animals, fishing, and her home. She enjoyed spending time outdoors with her husband Craig Merrell. They loved the Gallatin area of Montana where they met and also spent wonderful times in Stanley Idaho where they enjoyed fishing in the beautiful outdoors. Craig sadly preceded her in death in 2013. He was a watercolor artist and a skilled finish carpenter.  Barb loved art and had impeccable taste in everything. She was also a good cook, loved the Food Network Channel especially for fun new recipes. It has to be said that she loved animals of all kinds. One of her favorite things to do during the year was to watch the Westminster Dog Shows on TV, she loved them!   She had a great sense of humor and a warm smile that could light up any room.  She was a devoted sister, daughter and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Barbara is survived by her sister Carolyn, brother in law Dwight, of Chandler; her step-daughters, Jamie Hooker and Lindsay Waegner of Long Beach California, her devoted caregiver Karissa Storkson and Jan Swank. She is also survived by her beloved kitty, Shiloh.

Her ashes will be taken to Montana to the Gallatin Valley near Bozeman on Labor Day weekend in 2024, among the whispering golden aspens at her request.
