Barbara Joan Laramie
May 20, 1936 ~ November 11, 2023 (age 87) 87 Years Old
Barbara Joan Laramie, a Boise resident since 2008, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2023. She was 87. Barbara suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in her last few years and in her last months she was tenderly cared for at the Ashley Manor Willow facility in Caldwell. Barbara was born in Spokane, Washington to Genevieve and Willard Olsen. She was the youngest of four children.
Barbara graduated from Holy Family High School in Glendale, CA. She married Russell Palmer, and had twin girls Elaine and Margaret. Barbara and Russell later divorced. Barbara then met and married Ronald (Ron) Laramie, and together they had three boys, John, Robert, and Christopher. In 1963 the family moved to Ron’s hometown of Claremont, New Hampshire. They joined an extended family consisting of Ron’s Mother Leona, his sister Dorothy who became a close friend of Barbara’s and Ron’s younger brother Robert (Bob). Thankfully Barbara had learned to knit at young age and she was kept busy during the long New England winters knitting mittens for her brood.
In 1974, in search of a better job for Ron, the family moved back to southern California, settling into a home near the beach in Huntington Beach. Mittens now unneeded, Barbara turned from knitting to crocheting. Each of her children and many of her grandchildren has a crocheted blanket in their favorite colors. She also crocheted dozens potholders for friends and family. She learned to create fashionable scarves as well and was often seen wearing one of her creations.
Barbara was also a talented seamstress in her early years, making many of her own clothes and clothes for her children. In addition, Barbara was an excellent cook. She became more creative and adventurous with food as the years passed. An invite to dinner was something you didn’t want to pass up.
In 2001, Ron and Barbara gave up their home at the beach and traveled for seven-and-a-half years in a motor coach, visiting family and friends. They traversed the United States multiple times before settling in Boise. Ron passed away in 2010 after a short illness. Barbara joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church and became active in their ministry at the Life Care Center in Boise.
Barbara was always ready for an adventure: She and Ron celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on a Panama Canal cruise. In recent years, Barbara visited Japan, Singapore, Ireland and Germany.
Barbara is survived by a brother, Ronald (Bobbie), of Long Beach, California, and a sister, Lucille Dennis, of La Verne, California, daughter Elaine Kazakoff, (James) of Boise, stepdaughter Laurie Coleman of Rutland, Vermont, and sons John Laramie (Deborah) of Long Beach, California, and Robert Laramie of Prineville, Oregon, as well as 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Margaret, her son, Christopher, her parents, her beloved husband Ron and her brother Willard. The family is grateful for the staff at Ashley Manor Willow in Caldwell, Idaho, who cared for and cared about Barbara in her final months.
Services will be held in Boise, Idaho as well as a Celebration of Life Long Beach, California at a later date.
There will be a vigil open to friends and family of all faiths on Sunday Dec 3 at 4PM in the chapel at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 811 South Latah St, Boise. There will also be a Mass at Sacred Heart on Monday Dec 4 at 11AM.
